Bamboo Bench by Ben-Gal Arav

Israeli Gal Ben-Arav designer has created a bench using raw bamboo bench and cast aluminum.The Was created as a final project at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.

Sustainable is a wide concept. I chose to deal with it in the context of raw material, living environment, localism, and sustainable system.

The bamboo plant is renewed very quickly, therefore energetically efficient, with high mechanical strength and durability to weather conditions. Bamboo has wide range of configurations as a raw material, from its raw form, through compressed plates to veneer processing.

I chose to use bamboo in its raw form. In this way, the processing is minimal as well as the invested energy, it can be 100% recycled and the out coming morphology creates a new micro-wild natural environment that can be situated in an urban, industrial and gray environment and revive it.

Bamboo bench has two narratives:
My Inspiration to the bench lies in an image that was taken from the 30′s from my childhood landscapes with two workers leading bundles of papyrus through a swamp (see below). This photograph personally connected me to the bench and guided me to the wild morphology of the design.

The second narrative is the narrative of the product life cycle. Bamboo is not a characteristic species to the Middle East, but its origins are in Asia, however today it is grown in a controlled manner here in Israel. In my vision such a bench reflects a complete system that maintains itself through a life cycle that is built on three repeated main stages that preserve the sustainability values in a full manner:

- Growing bamboo – Establishment of a new agricultural industry, creating new economic opportunities, new sources of income and making the bamboo a local material that saves the need to import.

- Building a bench that integrates in the surrounding living environment in an energy-efficient manufacturing process.

- Recycling the raw material following weathering processes or vandalism that occurs frequently to street furniture. Used bamboo can be recycled to produce packaging or for many other purposes.

Through the design process, I tried to keep the materialism of the bamboo, its natural morphology, its simplicity, but on the other hand, to create a conflict and tension between the natural bamboos to the industrial aluminum casting.

MANIFETSO 2020: a container to be filled

Thursday, January 20, at the Caffè San Marco, was held the first symposium of the project Manifetso 2020.
The symposium was held in two parts: the first in which they revealed to present the project and a second in which the guests and the public have intervened to initiate a debate on the future of architecture and the city of Trieste. In fact, the ultimate goal of the project Manifetso is to produce real solutions to current needs and shared citizenship: it is, therefore, at this point to detect some problems in the city and to provide ideas for solutions. Barbariol first and then Mark Svara explained the first phase of the project Manifetso, collection of data through a questionnaire in many local citizens and public on-line web Manifetsto2020. The team has addressed this Manfietso first questionnaire to the population group ranging from 18 to 30 years, implying that there will be other surveys used for other age groups. This first moment of the duration of one month is intended to address the research topic of the working group Manifetso, currently consisting of 12 persons but that organizers hope will become more numerous.

The discussion between the public, sponsors and guests and then continued focusing on clarifying some points of the project and then, especially on the architectural aspects of the city. On these issues, Marco Svara pointed out that "a complex society requires a complex answer but not complicated", so that creates synergies between the different skills necessary for the government and the city's development. From our side, we sincerely hope that the initiative succeeds in Manifetso 2020.

Santa Teresa neighborhood is a historical burdens That offers great views of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The house is located in one of the points of Santa Teresa's Highest hill. From the north side of the house it is possible to see the old downtown; from the south side, a more panoramic view of Pão de Açucar and the Guanabara Bay. The site starts at 100 m above sea level at the cable car street and finishes at 125m at a breathtaking viewpoint of Pão de Açucar.

The project takes into consideration the two pre-existent levels of the pronounced topography: 120 m and 125 m over sea level.

At the lower level, there is a linear block that leads to the bedrooms and the office. Their main glass facade opens up to the enjoying garden on the east side. These two prismatic and linear volumes are opened on the east and west sides but are completely closed on the north and south sides, living the ground under them empty. The roof was designed to make a complementary ground on the upper plateau.

The living room is located over the higher plateau providing a view of downtown on the north side and of the Guanabara Bay and Pão de Açucar on the south. This volume is closed on the east and west sides to avoid sun heat and to emphasize the magnificent views on the other sides. It leaves the level below completely open. Thus, there is a bare level between bedrooms and living room which is filled by the kitchen, where, according to the traditional Brazilian culture, most people will spend their spare time.

It is a spread out and blown-up construction that should become part of Rio de Janeiro’s landscape.
